Geomatics Engineering (Map Engineering)

Geomatics Engineering (Mapping Engineering) is a branch of science and profession that includes making the measurements needed about the earth and the environment we live in, compiling (collecting), analysing and managing the data. Among the professional actions it includes;

- Land management, urban transformation, organisation and management of rural and urban areas, implementation of zoning plans, real estate valuation

- Engineering and mining surveying, surveying activities required for all transport infrastructure, tunnels, motorways, bridges.

- Measurement of objects on the Earth's surface in order to transform them into 3D information in the form of maps and models.

- Photogrammetry and remote sensing technologies

- The data produced are displayed, stored and analysed in integration with geographical information systems.

Turkey's demographic and economic transformation has been one of the most striking examples in the world where urban growth and economic growth have occurred in parallel. What distinguishes Turkey from many other developing countries is the speed, scale and geographical diversity of its spatial and economic transformation. Considering the requirements of Turkey, in order to ensure both sustainable development and efficiency of public and private sector investments, technical studies required for land management and utilisation, real estate valuation and development, infrastructure services in our country and inventory studies (land surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing, etc.) in which the data required for these studies are compiled are directly related to our profession. Unfortunately, our country needs a better designed system for inventory studies and our colleagues have intensive activities in this regard. Nowadays, a land management system for regulating and securing the property rights related to land by the public is considered as the main component of a free market economy and a priority step for access to an improved standard of living. The necessity of establishing land information management and management mechanisms has led to the search for ways to provide the necessary technology for collecting information, the effective use of information, the creation and development of information systems.

One of the areas that our profession has to deal with is the studies related to finding the financing resources required for the transformation of outdated, disaster-prone and dilapidated building areas, which are called ‘urban transformation’ in the society, into modern, urban, disaster-resistant building areas where infrastructure services are provided in full. The determination of the increase in value to be obtained from land, which is a scarce resource, and the taxation processes thereof are also an important area of endeavour for our profession. On the other hand, we adopt the understanding of land management not only in cities but also in rural areas with the land arrangements and technical applications required for the development and productivity of rural areas. Geomatics Engineering is also developing new standards, tools and performance indicators for urban and rural development in Turkey. Our department, which has organic ties with professionals in the market in the fields of financing and local governments, also offers training opportunities to our graduates who want to specialise in these subjects in the Urban Transformation Master's Programme and Land Management and Utilisation PhD Programme opened within Istanbul Okan University Institute of Science and Technology.

The mission of our department is to be a department that provides education and training in accordance with the needs of the country and the developments of the age in the light of current technologies, contributes to science and technology at national and international level with scientific research and applications, aims to be at the service of our country and humanity with its graduates, and aims to be recognised nationally and internationally at academic and technical level.

In accordance with the word meaning of Geomatics Engineering, not only theoretical subjects but also applications in the laboratory environment with major software used in the field of cartography in our country and in all developed countries are carried out in the courses that constitute the information technology part of our profession. In this way, we think that we are preparing our students by adapting them more to working life.

In order to contribute to the technical and social development of our students, our department organises various activities or participates in organised activities. Our teaching staff, who make one-to-one meetings with students during office hours, aim to find solutions to the technical problems of our students.

The students enrolled in our department can receive English preparatory education at Istanbul Okan University Department of Foreign Languages if they wish, and become engineer candidates who can follow the current developments in their professions, increase their communication with the world and get one step closer to the concept of ‘human’ engineer. The medium of instruction in our department is Turkish. With the preparatory education, we have a student profile that has a sufficient level of English knowledge and can use this knowledge, at the same time, with Turkish education, we have a student profile that can use local terminology and resources at the best level and increase productivity with learning in their mother tongue.

Students enrolled in our department have the opportunity to carry out course registrations, internship procedures, etc. with the help of their counsellors selected from the academicians of the department.
