In the second year, preclinical education is held in the Simulation Laboratory, and our students receive a preclinical practical education according to pre-determined scenarios over mock-up patients in various branches of dentistry, and thus prepare for the clinical education in the third year.
Our Simulation Laboratory contains 60 phantom units (mock-up patients) in total and was built to allow 60 students to receive a modern preclinical education at the same time. The students are able watch the applied practices and lectures of their instructors simultaneously or a recorded training video from personal LCD monitors on their own phantom units, thanks to the hi-tech camera and audio setup on the instructor's phantom unit.
Okan University Faculty of Dentistry accomplished another first in preclinical education by setting up an X-ray room within the Simulation Laboratory. A training-oriented X-ray device and a modern phantom were placed and a radiovisiography (RVG) system was established in this room, licensed by the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority (TAEK) and armored for protection against radiation, in accordance with the relevant legislation.
In this way, our students will also learn how to receive radiographs as they prepare for patient treatment practices in clinics in their personal phantom units. In the preclinical phase, they will get to know these digital radiography systems to be used frequently, especially in endodontic treatments, implement them and see and correct any mistakes on their personal monitors. Moreover, by this means, they will protect their patients from the adverse effects of ionizing radiation in clinical practices.
Following the active and intensive preclinical education, having acquired the knowledge and skills to treat patients in clinics under supervision of the academic staff, our students will attend their theoretical classes and patient side clinical training in the Faculty of Dentistry Education and Training Hospital at our Mecidiyeköy Campus, beginning from the third year.
