The main reasons for the Mechatronics Engineering doctoral program are presented under the three subheadings below:

I) The need for R&D experts in the presence of technological advancements in industry:
New projects involving advanced technology consist of mechanical structures as well as complicated feedback mechanisms for measurement - control and evaluation.
These systems have almost completely become computerized. They are also equipped with hardware and software that provide self-monitoring and inventory storage as well as hierarchical exchange of information with environmental units.
Adaptation according to the manufacturing constraints, programming and processing in an optimum way require special formation that relies on mechanical engineering, electrical-electronics engineering, computer engineering and even control engineering knowledge.
For example, using a robot in a manufacturing process exposes the need explained above. With the help of the Mechatronics Engineering Ph.D. Program this need will be met by educating expert engineers who will use these advanced technological products effectively.

II) The need of the Turkish industry to develop new manufacturing systems and products:
A much more important reason than the use of imported manufacturing systems is that the local firms which compete in the international arena cannot transfer licenses and know-how from abroad anymore. Therefore, these firms need to develop their own technologies.
For the last ten years, R&D projects that received awards or have been funded by foundations have had systems and products that contain mechatronics properties.

III) Innovation and the development of new concepts:
Besides the transfer of the results of scientific research-development without any delay, new development principles, new perception and information technologies, new control and process philosophies that maintain the success of the system at a very high level form the most important challenge of our time.
The design, implementation and operation of mechatronics systems permit the use of all types of new concepts and applications in a flexible manner because these systems are based more on software than hardware.
Education of innovative expert engineers with the Mechatronics Engineering Ph.D. program greatly improves the technological competitiveness of a country. Furthermore, this will help the country export high value-added products.
In light of the above information, the goal of the Mechatronics Engineering Ph.D. program is to give graduates the following knowledge and skills:

  • Solving of engineering problems by using the interdisciplinary synergetic approach of mechatronics,
  • The ability to design mechatronics products and systems,
  • The ability of using mechatronics approach to analyze and develop existent product or its process,
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other disciplines and the ability to work as part of a team,
  • Application of engineering in accordance with ethical principles,
  • Use of technology with the awareness of its local and global socioeconomical effects,
  • Understands necessity of and applies lifelong learning.

Graduates of this Ph.D. program will possess the technical knowledge they need to meet the needs of industry, be proficient in their area of expertise, and will be able to conduct further research in their field. The language of instruction in this Ph.D. program will be English, so that graduates can follow the latest advancements and have a say in the international arena in this field.
